Is your domain name attracting traffic or is it lost in the irrelevant part of cyberspace?

Getting your domain name is one of the most important steps into starting a successful home based business. You need to first have a niche. I am assuming you already have a market niche selected.

Make a list of the keywords related to that niche, you can use f.ree tools like Overture, however the Skycastles f.ree tool is more complete and includes a merged link for Overture and Google search engine.

Take the generated list of keywords and brain storm the ones that are more related to your niche and your persona. Create different phrases combining different keywords. You can use the f.ree tool Make Words to suggest available domain names. You will go to the main page and type the first keyword or phrase on your list on the Advanced Keyword Search field.

As you submit your phrases you will get a list of suggested domain names. Open a Notepad or Word and make note of the ones you feel are more appropriate your niche. Do not duel on which exact domain to use, just write down the ones you think are good candidates, we will work on selection later.

Once you have your list ready look for domains that are easy to remember and that have a rhythm to it. For example GreatCandles.com reads and sounds better than CandlesGreat.com. When writing your domains make sure you capitalize the first letter of each word to make it easier for you to process.

Read the domains allowed and again feel the rhythm. Is it sticky? When you read it does it triggers your mind with pictures about your niche? Get on the shoes of a potential customer; is the domain easy to remember?

Now look for meaning, does the domain covers your niche correctly? Does it leave anything out? For example: If you sell candles but also design them, then the keyword design should be on your domain.

Will adding a dash, a preposition or a number make it more meaningful? If your domain name is too long but its part of a good keyword phrase you may want to include dashes between each word or set of words. It will make it easier for your potential customers to read the domain and remember it. Search engines will take out the dashes out of the domain name when looking for content.

You've been going your list of domain names, now you need to start narrowing it down to just a top 3 list. You may want to run the top 3 through some friends note their reaction and noticed if it sticks to them. Also ask for suggestions and feedback.

Once you have your winner it is time to acquire it. There are plenty of places out there that will gladly sell you domain names with a year ownership for $10.00 even $15.00. Please understand that there are sites which can have a domain ready for you for about $7.00 with a year ownership.

You may find cheaper prices on other sites but they require an ownership longer than a year and hosting conditions you may not agree with. Please stay away from the "Daddy" site. You know which one! They have a reputation for taking over your domain if your website is suspended or blacklisted; trust me you do not want to go through that.
